They're also in Oregon, with some members in Colorado, and many have aggregated in New York (NXIVM hub). The cult is dangerous. Their core of their beliefs are in alignment with Jihad & ISIS, structurally. They simply use American language, and marketing in conjunction with their "brand".
NXIVM obtained attention, for several reasons, including purportedly, that all females had relations with The Spokesman, Raniere.
He was the marketing face, and NOT The Leader. They have more powerful backing. I met Raniere, when he called himself by a different name, in Santa Cruz, more than half a lifetime ago. I saw his number, told him what I thought of him, and walked away. I have zero tolerance, for men like him. He told me he was connected to attorney's, and that I'd pay, for rejecting him. I perceived it as a two-year-old's tantrum. (How a person responds, is one way, you'll know them.)
Raniere is a Poker Player, who cheats. He is part of Pick-Up-Artist culture. I spent my 20's with those men, interviewing them about linguistics, and studying their language patterns, for prevention. They were hurting women I knew, and I wanted to find out, why these otherwise bright, independent females, were falling for it.
INVESTOR SIDE BAR: The people he works with, at low levels, have periodically harassed me, and I didn't realize the NXIVM connection, until recently, as they were strangers to me. The people who have funded him, some of them I have worked with in Venture Capital in Silicon Valley. Those individuals, that I met, I held a general respect. I did not know about their NXIVM ties, and nothing is ever, all good, or all bad. If they funded something, it does not necessarily mean they are complicit. If they are not involved in cult beliefs, nor illegal actions, then things instead exist on a spectrum. I get the sense, that well documented cult leaders, have been forming subsidiaries, and marketing, to see what "sticks", and to see who in interested, in investing. The investors that I know, may have authorized funding, in that sense; without having the full story outside of their own specific due-diligence.
There are articles stating that NXIVM women, even married, even in committed relationships, had to consent to Raniere. This is (a) polyamory, (b) cheating, (c) criminal coercion, (d) criminal non-consent, (e) criminal assault.
While we are entitled to religious freedom, their conservative framework, is criminal with the inclusion of ideaology regarding Honor Killings. Sex with "one" person (which means their partner, as sex with "leader", doesn't "count") at time of "union". (I've been researching marriage records, and many of these groups and branches, fail to be civil. Instead the religious ceremonies, of coupling and uncoupling, seem more arbitrary, and at the whim of the guru. There is danger in this, for home ownership, parental rights, and also criminal prosecution when there is rape, or murder.)
Separation has to be approved by the master, or it is allowed "by death do we part". They believe in killing to "avenge" the "slighted" male. Depending on how the abuser is connected to other criminals, the forensic paperwork will read: murder, car crash, suicide, overdose - when it's all the same thing: an Honor Killing; a homicide.
Years ago I did research into sexual preferences, and found it fascinating. I never researched, archaic Christian beliefs, because they never had anything to do with me. I've always rejected those. I was born into lineage that I understood as matriarchal (allegiance to The Crown). When I have researched my mother, her clan is patrilineal, Ojibwe, and my father is outside of it, which may be why I was adopted when they divorced. I am unsure his religion; I'm trying to remember. He might be Catholic? Even so, my beliefs are still towards The Crown, and Matriarchy. We all come from mothers, who are to be honored, and revered. I believe in monogamy, and also health and freedom. I am against Patriarchy. I am against all systems, that hurt others, in any way.
I'm acutely aware, of Honor Killings, and Insurance Settlements, since I filed cases with Judge L., in 2018. I have always reported fraud, in my career. Being curious, I usually want to know how something works, if I'm interested in it. Otherwise I don't want to waste the brain-space, and instead generalize if it's healthy, protective, and focus on results. Honor Killings and Insurance Fraud, I have little energy for. It's so bizarre, and outside my wheelhouse. I'm into patterns though. This pattern kept showing up, and I wanted to know WHY.
It took me years, to grasp the motives, of these people, who I perceive, as utterly deranged. It's their religion. It's their cult.
If you meet the Buddha on the road, Kill Him. This means, there is no guru. We are our own truth, inside. Love is not sex. It never is. But healthy sex, is a part of a loving, committed, consensual relationship. Branding and harm, is never love. It's abuse. It is the same, as accepting being owned, like cattle. This is not devotion, nor commitment. This is a violation, of fundamental human rights, and there is no thing that exists, that is ever worth it, to trade our integrity for, either as giver or recipient.
